Beach-Art is worldwide!

Worldwide? Yes we are! And I am so proud..

The art of Beach-Art is really going to ‘every corner’ of the world! Some visitors of the market send me a picture of their bought one, when they are home. And I like it! For me, the contacts on the market are nice. Talking with people, asking where they’re from and how their experience on the island is. I like to know that Beach-Art goes worldwide, and to ‘all the corners of the world’.

I speak to all kind of  vistors from a lot of countries, because the Canary Islands are a favorite destination during wintertime. Many people like a little bit of sun in wintertime and it’s only a few hours fly to be here. But also cruiseships visit the harbour of our island, even as world-explorers and hikers from all over the world.

Internet is big, you can find a lot of everything on it. Information of the island for example, but it’s also a big source of all other kind of data. It has many possibilities….. one of them is that I can make clear where my customers are, or people who are interested in Beach-Art.

As you can see, Beach-Art is in at least 55 countries….!

Order your presents for Thanksgiving on time!

Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the United States and Canada to say ‘thank you’ (historically to God) for the harvest and for all other good things in the past year. In Amercia it’s celebrated on the fourth thursday in November. But in Canada, where the harvest ends earlier, Thanksgiving is in October.

Thanksgiving is celebrated with the whole family and they travel miles and miles to be together. Eating, celebrating, giving little presents to each other. Because in the US it’s always on a Thursday, many employees get a day off on the following day (friday). It is a beautiful little holiday!

It is traditional to give presents on Thanksgiving. Shouldn’t it be nice to give something handmade on the Canary Islands?

A sweet scene with the moon, a romantic couple and small pieces of sea glass as twinkling stars.

Don’t wait too long to order your handmade and unique homedecoration!
Your order will be firmly packed as a present and ready to give to your loved ones!

When you are looking for a present for Thanksgiving or a just married couple, take a look at Beach-Art’s online shop on Etsy.

Once in a while I take a small bag with sand, and very small pebbles with me to my atelier. When it is dried, I always find little pieces of seaglass, some are not bigger that a few milimeters. The little stars above this romantic couple are 1-2 mm pieces of turquoise colored seaglass.

When ordered online, it will take approx. 7 days before it will be at yours.
It is firmly packed and ready to give as a present to your beloved ones.

October, a new high season

October. The new high season has begun. After a warm summer in which the wind was strong during many days in summer, now it seems to be a calmer time of year. Since almost two weeks the wind and see become quiet. On many Canary Islands the high season starts in October, with many tourists from northern Europe, who want to escape the approaching cold, humid and dark days. They book a holiday , are looking for a nice ‘casa’, sign up for tracking or rerlax a few days on a cruiseship.

The MeinSchiff 1 is one of those cruise ships that will moor here. In the spring of 2018 the ship Mein Schiff 1 of TUI Cruises was replaced by the Neue Mein Schiff 1. This new ship has several restaurants, bars and lounges. To be precisely, you can count 12 restaurants and bistros! There are many possibilities to eat and try all kinds of food. In addition, the ship has the ‘Fischmarkt’ where you can taste the most delicious dishes from the sea. The ship has sixteen decks and is more than 300 meters long.

With more than 2,800 passengers and 1,000 crew members, the ship is a small village which is moored for one day in the port of San Sebastian.

October is also the month of ‘ Virgen de Guadaloupe‘.  A celebration which is very important on this island. Since 1872 the descent of the Virgin of Guadalupe celebrated from the sanctuary of Puntallana to the capital of the island, San Sebastián de La Gomera. Because of crisis, the imhabitants asked the bishop to send the Virgin every 5 years to the capital of the island, (instead of every year) a request that was approved. In 1968 the diocese of Tenerife decided that the image not only went down to San Sebastian, but would be brought over the entire island, and would visit all municipalities such as Agulo, Alajeró, Hermigua, Vallehermoso and Valle Gran Rey .

It’s the only Canarian descent in which the Virgin moves from her sanctuary to the capital of the island by sea. The descent starts on the Monday after the first Saturday of October and after this pilgrimage-tour through the island, the statue returns to its hermitage. This return coincides on 12 December (appearance of the Virgin Mariana) or the following Saturday. Once in her chapel, the statue does not return for five years.

This weekend will be a crowdy weekend into the main capital: A lot of people will be here because of the fesitvities on monday the 8th AND the MeinSchiff 1 will be in the harbour. I am looking foreward to be on the market and welcome all people!

How to find Seaglass yourself!

We love to be in the neighbourhood of water, no matter if it is a river, a lake or the big ocean. The last one has – by far – our preference. Even our dog loves water on the rocky shore, near a river or on the beach. We forget about time, lunch, dinner and appointments when we hear the splashing sound of water, taste the saltiness of the sea, or see the sparkling of the sun in the water.

We are a lucky threesome, I know!

Living on a rock about 80 meters above the ocean, It’s easy for us to go to the beach and take a bath,  a dive or to go for a SUP. After some action (or without al that action.. 😉 ) I love strolling along the shore and look in the wet sand. There I know to find my little treasures.

How to look, and find seaglass

Choosing the best times to go for seaglass, depends on the tide. Look at online charts to find out when the sea is at lowest, and plan your trip. The best time for finding it, is an hour before the lowest point is there.

I find pieces of seaglass all year long, but the best catches are during winter and after stormy weather. Here on the islands, it’s always good to go for searching, after days of ‘Mar de fondo’. ‘Mar de fondo’ means the swells are bigger, made far away from land, and coming up roling to the shores. The swells are not made by just some wind around the islands, but with a free and strong wind far, far away on open seas. The ocean has all time and strenght to let the swells grow, sometimes up to 4-5 meter high! The waves of ‘mar de fondo’ are characterized by the regular distances and the smooth tops, the wavelength is much higher than the altitude, with rounded ridges that never break on the high seas.

Don’t walk away from dirt and take your time!

A smooth, well-groomed beach is not where to look for seaglass. No, find a beach that has shells, rocks and stones, or even litter lying around! Or make on lazy sundays a little research on internet and find beaches nearby a dump, or wharves from many decades ago. Those are the places! … You have to do something to find it..!

Don’t go out for a quick walk on the beach to search for seaglass. Walk slowly and focus your eyes on little colors, different that shells and sand. It takes some time to learn but at the end, you know how to search. Parts of the beach where a lot of seaweed is collected, or with small rocks, are real nice places to find seaglass.

The shoreline is not always THE best spot. Look where the tide was at highest point, and check out the dirt, driftwood and seaweed, too. You will be surprised what you will find there! Usually I walk the same stretch of beach twice. Back and forth. The incidence of light and the way you search, makes you notice new pieces of seaglass on your returned walk.

Try to walk on the beach with the sun from beside or behind you. The sparkling of the sun into the seaglass will help you to find your treasures a bit easier.

Doubts about seaglass: plastic, pebble or trash..

Do you have doubts about the seaglass you just found? Tap against it with your ring. It must sound hard and light. Is  that little piece in your hand almost black and are you still doubting if it’s a pebble or real seaglass? Then backlit it by the sun. A dark glass shard can reveal a very special treasure! Light can comes through in green, Yellow, Blue or even Red!

Enjoy your treasures!

Place your collected sea glass in glass jars, bottles and trays. Place them in the window light and enjoy the beautiful colors that are visible when the daylight changes.

A shop on Etsy for Beach-Art!

I think I have a problem. Into my head are always little things I’d like to explore. My head sometimes looks like the inside of an oldfashioned watch. All those little cogs and wheels are always moving, creating, wondering and exploring. I cannot sit and watch, I have to move, have to create and I like to explore. Looking for seaglass, cleaning it and making new items for the markets do fill a big part of my week. It’s all to blame to this lovely island in the big ocean. This island is the big source of all my ideas 😉

So, I am trying to reschedule my days, and it seems to work. Making a good shop was a big wish but it is also a big challenge and it takes a lot of time. Such as preparing and making a Christmas dinner for the whole family. Are you gonna do everything yourself: cutting, cooking, stewing and preparing? Or do you outsource some things…

Let Etsy do it

I decided to outsource the design an paymentsystem to Etsy. They work with a professional designed online store where you can easily place the photos yourself, and write your own texts. It’s easy and tips and tricks are very usefull. The global payment system has also been fully devised. Very good, it saves me a lot of hours, even when I like to make a shop on my own, sometimes you have to make choises.

So, within a few hours I had a well-organized store, a shop full of beautiful presents from the sea. The virtual doors are 24/7 open and you can take a look at the items as many times you want and on any time of the day. Curious? Click on the Etsy-Logo below or on the fat-printed words above.

Still you can ask me for a special order, a customized item with special colors or with less or more figures on it. I love to make it for you!

Valle Gran Rey is the sunny side of the island

Valle Gran Rey

At the market of Valle Gran Rey (Every Sunday from 09.00 ’till 15.00) are a lot of local handicraftsmen and so is Beach-Art. The market is behind the busstation and contains a lot of nice stands. I really invite you to come and see. It is a ‘famous’ market and if you are on La Gomera, you have to see it 😉

The canary islands are also famous about something else: the sun. It’s important to protect you against this brutal one. With cream, a hat or an umbrella. On the beach, in the city, but also on the market. De governement has cutted drastically the big trees on the square where the market is. The big Indian laurel trees (laureles indianos) are so cutted now, they cannot give no shade at all. So, I decide to make our own sunprotection for the market of Valle Gran Rey.

The local fabric-shop on the island sells beautiful cloth all year long, especially for sun protection. Except in January, the moment when I was in that store. In the first part of Februari the whole shop is full of tulle, felt, lace, straps, glitters and masks. In short: the whole shop is totally filled of carnival affairs! They love carnival and the most beautifull creations will be designed. So, with all these carnival affairs,  there is no place for sun protecting cloth!

Nevertheless, they have that special material for sunprotection at the attic, the owner told me. If I could tell him what color I want, he could bring it down. Meanwhile, the store was packed with women who all need lace, yarn or something else for the costumes they are making. And yes, all these glittering, furry and colorfull stuff is very nice to see… I’m getting greedy, even though I have no idea where to use it for.

An hour later with 7 meter sunprotection material, yarn and a pack of new needles, I drove home. I had measured it very presicely. I need to cut and sew it all at once, because it’s impossible to try or measure it ‘half-way’. I was excited to make a sunroof for my own place on the market of Valle Gran Rey! A sort of tent, wind-proof and a good, firm protection against the sun. Lets start!

Installed behind my sewingmachine, I started ‘small’, with the first little parts I had marked and cutted out. Within a few hours the ‘thing’ grows and grows. After two days of non-stop working, it was ready. My own sunroof for the market of Valle Gran Rey.

And then….Sunday….market. THE day to check if al measurements were good. I took my scissors with me for ‘in case of’ but is wasn’t necessary. No..it was PERFECT! Tourists at the market of Valle Gran Rey can visit Beach-Art while standing into the shadow, and my work is protected against sun and rain. Huray!!

After almost two years of using it, I am still glad I made it.
